Bond University Undergraduate Exchange
Program Overview:
The Bond University exchange program is open to all University of Delaware undergraduate students. Under the terms of Bond's institutional agreement with UD, two UD students may study at Bond per calendar year, for one semester each. The two students selected for exchange enroll directly in courses with Bond University students, live on campus, and enjoy life on Australia's Gold Coast. This area of the country is world-renowned for its beaches and waterways, national parks, rainforests and mountain ranges. It has mild winters and warm summers and is a clean and beautiful location. The local climate is sub-tropical, with temperatures between 63 degrees and 82 degrees during the day and plenty of sunshine. Surfing is the most popular local sport, with water temperatures around 66 to 70 degrees all year round.
General Info / Student Life
The University: Founded in 1989, Bond University is a small (approx. 2500 students), private university consisting of five academic units:
- Faculty of Business Technology and Sustainable Development
- Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences
- Faculty of Law
- Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine
Bond emphasizes instruction in small groups; results of recent surveys rank Bond University first in good teaching, overall satisfaction, and graduate employment. The University hosts students from Australia as well as from abroad, with approximately 50% of students coming from overseas countries.
Bond University recognizes the importance that sport, fitness and recreation play in the day-to-day lives of its students. As such, students have access to all of the sporting facilities and services on campus. The University boasts a host of sporting clubs, recreational and social clubs, and many other opportunities for engagement.
Language: English
Calendar : Fall semester runs from early September through mid-December. Applications for fall semester are due March 15. Spring semester runs mid-January (making UD winter session impossible) through the end of April. Applications for Spring semester are due October 1.
Visas and Passports: All international students, except New Zealand residents, are required to obtain a Student Visa before they can commence their studies at Bond University. Students who are citizens of non-gazetted countries (countries not approved for a streamlined visa process) must obtain their student visa by mail or in person. The U.S. is a gazetted country, and its citizens are eligible for an online application process.
A Student Visa application can only be completed once students have received their Confirmation of Enrolment Form from the University. This form is only released once students have paid all of the requested fees and met all of the conditions of their offer. For further information regarding visas, requirements and the process, please visit the home page for the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs.
Transportation: The Bond campus is fairly small, so transportation on campus is not necessary. Students normally take advantage of the public bus system to travel to the nearby beaches. Students are discouraged from renting a car in Australia since traffic moves on the left, and hence the risk of accidents is quite high.
Housing: Students are encouraged to live on campus and to apply for such housing via Bond's web site. Due to the popularity of on-campus housing at Bond, students are encouraged to apply on the first day that housing applications are accepted. Although the staff at Bond attempts to find housing on campus for all exchange students who request it, such accommodation cannot be guaranteed.
Courses: Students enroll in 4 courses and earn 12 credits. Bond does not permit students to enroll in 5 courses. It is the student's responsibility to secure the necessary UD transfer credit permissions prior to departure.
Costs: Students pay their regular undergraduate full-time tuition to the University of Delaware via normal UD billing and payment procedures; they do not pay on-campus housing or meal plan. Students do not pay a deposit or program fee to the Center for International Studies. Any financial aid or scholarships that normally apply to tuition will continue to apply.
The cost of a dormitory room, meal plan, activities fee, and other obligatory expenses are paid directly to Bond. See the Bond University web site for the most up-to-date costs (which are listed in Australian dollars).
Requirements
All University of Delaware undergraduates are eligible to apply. A minimum overall GPA of 2.8 is required. Students must submit the online application by October 1 (for spring admission) or March 15 (for fall admission), as well as one letter of recommendation submitted online by a UD faculty member. (See "Information for REcommenders" in the menu to the left.)
Students apply directly to Bond after being accepted into the exchange by the Center for International Studies.
Scholarships
Need- and merit-based scholarships are available to UD undergraduates on a competitive basis. For more details and to apply for a scholarship, go to our scholarships page (and be sure to submit scholarship materials by the deadlines ).
